It is the process of restoring the aesthetic and chewing function that has been impaired as a result of the loss of teeth due to various reasons such as gum diseases or caries in the mouth. The dental prosthesis should fit the person’s mouth and look natural. Therefore, dental prostheses are produced individually.

The main purpose of the prosthesis application is to try to regain the lost chewing function of the patient. In addition, it is aimed to correct the deteriorated speech and to improve the aesthetic appearance.

In which cases is the prosthesis procedure applied?

In cases where the tooth decays, breaks or the filling or fillings are insufficient, prosthesis is applied. If the discomfort in the person’s tooth cannot be corrected with other treatments, prosthesis is applied.

Prosthesis is applied as a last resort. In order to eliminate the problems faced by the person, first of all, treatment options for saving the tooth are evaluated.

Taking the measurements of the lower and upper jaws is extremely important in the implemantation of prosthetic teeth. The measurement process is completed in only one session and this procedure does not cause pain in the patient. Then, the impression taken is transferred to the model and a 3D copy of the prosthetic teeth is prepared. There are two different types of prosthesis application, which is based on the protection of healthy teeth. These:

Fixed Prosthesis: This type of prosthesis, which the person cannot remove according to his own will, starts with the reduction of the existing tooth by cutting it. Then, the existing tooth of the person is covered and the prosthesis is mounted on it. It is a type of prosthesis that is generally applied to people with less tooth loss.

Fixed dentures are easy to use, aesthetically pleasing and take up as much space as the replacement tooth. However, fixed dentures are difficult to clean in hard-to-reach teeth and there is no additional possibility when one of the support teeth is extracted.

Fixed prosthesis has two applications.

Zirconium Restorations: It is the most preferred fixed prosthesis material. It is also applied to people with metal allergies. Zirconium-coated dentures provide your teeth with a smooth and natural shine.

Laminate Restorations: It is applied only on the anterior teeth and there is very little interference with the teeth. It is applied in cases such as hiding existing cavities, closing the discoloration of the teeth, correcting the appearance caused by the fracture.

Removable Prosthesis: These are the appliances that can be put on and taken off by the person. After each meal, it should be cleaned with water and special cleaning brushes.

There are 4 types of removable prostheses.

Total Dentures: Total dentures, also known as “dentures” among the people, are a type of prosthesis applied when there are no natural teeth left in the mouth.

Partial Denture: Partial denture, also known as “hooked tooth prosthesis”, is made when some of the natural teeth are present and some of them are extracted. It is obtained from acrylic or from a single piece of casting.

Immediate Prosthesis: If all the teeth of the person need to be extracted and the patient does not want to be toothless, this prosthesis is placed until the permanent prosthesis is ready. Then, when the healing in the tissues is completed, the immediate prostheses become incompatible with the mouth and permanent prostheses are applied to the person.

Prosthesis on Implant: Implants can be applied to increase the adhesion of the removable prosthesis in people who have no teeth. In this way, the prosthesis of the person is attached to the implants in the jawbone and the effectiveness of chewing and speaking functions is increased.

Fixed and removable dentures should be renewed every 4 years, but this period varies according to the importance the person gives to oral care.
